Jane Werry - Teacher in E2 & Year 3 Team Leader
Sadly, Jane Werry passed away on the 13th June after a short illness.
Jane had an extensive teaching career and began here at Eastern Hutt School in 2000 having completed 25 years both in the Juniors and the Middles.
Jane was a dedicated teacher and school was her life and happy place. She was determined her students would make good progress, and that they would be their best selves. Jane wanted her students to believe they could do anything! She always told them they were Mathematicians, Scientists, Artists, Writers and Musicians.
She made the classroom warm and welcoming and used her other talents in arts and graphics to make the room a vibrant learning space. Her students’ work was beautifully displayed and looked like a gallery.
Some of her students wrote on their Matariki Gratitude Stars this week that Miss Werry was: kind, caring, pretty, beautiful, helpful, funny, smart, mathematician, Maths Queen and phenomenal!
Other comments made by students were:
I love hanging out with Miss Werry.
I like it because she is kind to me
I like it when she hugs me and makes me laugh
Jane had extensive curriculum knowledge and shared this in her role both as Middles Team Leader and Maths Leader. Jane also used her talents as part of a team to produce the first school Mural in 2010, followed by another one a year later.
Jane also tutored many students and helped them to change their perception of themselves as learners. Jane helped many trainees and Beginning Teachers on starting their teaching career.
Many of her students still talk about Miss Werry and some would pop in to see her. Jane was always very interested in how her students had got on at college and what they had gone on to do.
We have passed on our condolences to Jane’s family and 24 staff are attending her Funeral today. I have been given the privilege of speaking about Jane at the service and the school will remember her at our Matariki Celebration on Thursday.
Thank you to those families and children who have sent in messages and these will be passed onto her family.
Moe mai rā – rest now in peace

Matariki Celebrations
This week we celebrate Matariki. It's our time of Remembrance, Gratitude and Looking to the Future. Our tamariki have been learning about the Matariki stars, learning Matariki waiata, writing their memories and what they are grateful for, and wishes for the future. These stars have been displayed in the hall, so you may like to pop in and have a look. We are celebrating with a special assembly on Thursday. We will especially remember Cooper Gerrie, Jane Werry and Liz Bardsley who have passed away since last Matariki. They have all been a special part of our community and we are thinking of their whānau at this time.

Back to School!
I returned on Friday from 7 weeks leave for a Principals’ Sabbatical which included study and holiday. I visited some schools in both Sydney and Wellington, along with readings and interviews. Part of my focus was Universal Design for Learning that ensures learning is more accessible not just for students with additional learning needs but all students. We will look to explore this further.

I would like to acknowledge the wonderful way that Ann Gwilliam and Hayley Walshe stepped up to be Acting Principals while I was on Sabbatical. I left feeling very confident that Eastern Hutt School was in excellent hands under their leadership and management. Thank you too to Jacqui Graham who stepped up to be Acting Deputy Principal and gave great support to Ann and Hayley.
We hope you all enjoy your Matariki Public Holiday on Friday and get a chance to do the things you love with your whānau.
