Last week was Samoan Language Week. Language and culture are important to our tamariki and whānau identity and I know many classes celebrated this last week. Our lovely Teacher Aide, Tai, kindly made Panikeke, traditional Samoan donut, to share with the staff. See the beautiful display by the hall.

Petone Settlers Museum
The Mana Middles had a wonderful time exploring the Petone Settlers Museum last week, learning all about the tangata whenua of our local area. We investigated how Māori lived when they first migrated to the foreshore of Te Whanganui -o-Tara and what life was like for the first settlers to arrive on our shores. We explored the different tools and resources Māori used to hunt, cook and work the land along with some very interesting tools the first settlers brought with them. We discovered how different Petone and Lower Hutt looked compared with today and how important the river was to the people. We got creative and made our own 3D map of the Hutt Valley.
William - I liked making the little village.
Tiffany - I like looking at the exhibits of the birds and the Māori pa.
Hunter - I liked seeing Ciana dressed up in the early settler dress
Matthew - I liked looking at the early settler and Māori tools and working out what they used them for.

Cross Country
On Tuesday 28th May, our keen EHS Cross Country team competed in the South Western Zone Cross Country at Sladden Park, Petone. The course proved challenging, with a load of talented runners to compete against. Our students demonstrated an abundance of Eastern Hutt values, such as perseverance, resilience and support. The chant of EHS echoed over the field. That is what sport at a primary level is all about. All events consisted of approximately 70 competitors. Thank you to our many parents and grandparents who helped our team on the day, marshalling the crew, and team support!
The following students were placed in the top fifteen and will represent the South Western Zone in the Inter Zone on Tuesday 11th June at Trentham Memorial Park. All parents have received an email with the necessary information. Please ensure your child wears their EHS sports uniform to school and has appropriate warm layers of clothing to put on. A woollen beanie is also a good idea. Change of socks and shoes is essential. Please meet in the school hall at 9:10am. We will be requiring parents to help transport our team.
