Eastern Hutt Pöwhiri
Our pöwhiri is a ceremonial process based on Mäori tradition that welcomes new whänau (family) and staff to our school community. This process signifies kotahitanga (unity). It sees that the Tangata Whenua (people of the land – of the school) and manuhiri (visitors) become one group.
Each term we have a significant number of new tamariki (children) and their whänau joining our school, therefore we carry out a pöwhiri on the first Friday of each term at 9:30am. These four events are anticipated with much enthusiasm. We all enjoy coming together to welcome and unite new people, as well as singing waiata to tautoko (support) our speakers and the manuhiri. At every pöwhiri, we feel the mana (prestige) we uphold for our school and its people – it is a truly special event!
Manuhiri that attend our pöwhiri are the whänau of our new tamariki. This is not only parents and siblings, but Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles too!
Attending our pöwhiri provides an opportunity to meet and talk to key staff of our kura (school).
