Enviroschools / SchoolGen
Eastern Hutt School is currently a silver status Enviroschool. This was achieved in 2011.
Enviroschools is based on five guiding principles.
Empowered Students are enabled to participate in a meaningful way in the life of Eastern Hutt School. They are supported to take action for real change.
Learning for Sustainability recognises the types of teaching and learning that foster student empowerment, decision-making, action and sustainable outcomes.
Māori Perspectives honours the status of tangata whenua in this land and the value of indigenous knowledge in enriching and guiding learning and action.
Respect for the Diversity of People and Cultures acknowledges the unique gifts, contributions and perspectives of individuals and groups, reinforcing the need for participatory decision-making.
Sustainable Communities act in ways that nurture people and nature, now and in the future, to maintain the health and viability of our environment, society, culture and economy.
We have our school Enviro group, 'the EnviroWarriors' who support our environmental initiatives such as our gardens, fruit trees, and recycling programmes. The EnviorWarriors blog is: http://www.ehsenviro.blogspot.co.nz

We continue to promote sustainability initiatives throughout our school and wider community. We aim to take every opportunity to teach our students the importance of caring for the environment so future generations can continue to enjoy our natural environment.
The school is very proud to be involved in the Schoolgen program since 2009. This program is organised and sponsored by Genesis Energy. Our solar panels were installed and an active Solar Kids club has been established. The club focuses on raising awareness and knowledge of renewable energy within the club, school and wider community. The Solar Kids learn about the importance of solar energy. They gain understanding about current environmental issues such energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and climate change. A variety of energy saving schemes and renewable technologies are also investigated.
